Career counseling of
individuals should begin in school because as students, they are expected to
opt for a particular stream or specialization which they shall study thoroughly
in the years to come. Career counseling at this stage shall be beneficial as it
shall help them zero in on the subjects they want to study in the future,
without experiencing burn-outs. In the absence of appropriate supervision and
counseling, many students end up making wrong decisions which they often regret
later.
Every individual has certain strengths which when identified may
become his unique selling propositions in the job market or when engaging in
entrepreneurial work. However, for some individuals, it is hard and often
challenging to identify their unique strengths.
Making
an Informed Choice while choosing a Career: Career
counseling helps students in understanding the pros and cons of different
educational options. They acquire a better know how of the career options these education options
can offer them in the future, which helps them avoid the risk of changing career
paths later on in life or experiencing the agony of being extreme misfits for
the assigned job description .
Career counseling by elder siblings or peers: One’s elder siblings (like an elder brother or an elder cousin) or one’s friends who have been through the grind can advise an individual on the choices to be made pertinent to career selection, considering the constraints and circumstances of the individual.
How career counseling works: Career Counseling makes use of methodically developed propensity tests and individuality tests which assist a career counselor in sharing the most appropriate, best-matched vocation-related advice with the student.
Students, along with their parents, must begin career planning after
the student reaches the 10th standard in school, as after this, only
one, selected stream can be pursued and career options will be limited by the
chosen stream. Hence, the gamut of subjects chosen must be in accordance with
the interests of the student. The teachers and mentors at schools must also
guide students towards choosing the right career paths for themselves.
Career counseling can enhance the drive and morale of the concerned
individuals and give students something to look forward to, which benefits the
whole community greatly.
